Prevention of Truancy
Often when we
get to this issue, we start to wonder about the consequences of it (students) or
how to deal with the aftermath of it (parents) however we never stop to ask
ourselves two of the biggest questions related to truancy: Why is happening? And
how we can prevent it?
In a recent
study about Truancy the author concluded that “schools need to address the
question of why pupils want to leave in the first place" (Tobin, 2009) which was highlighted
as a solution, and it represents one because if we know what makes students
desire to avoid going to school we can tackled the problem in a more productive
way giving strategies and solutions that can actually make a difference.
Yet there
is another approach we can always take to prevent truancy: “Experts agree that
the #1 way to reduce truancy is to attach families to the schools and the
community to work together to understand the importance of education.” (Kristi, 2016) With this approach the
aim is to emphasize why education matters, yet usually we fail to demonstrate it
to our students.
The best
way to address truancy is a combination of both.
